The Rally Reading Series and Words Without Borders

On June 2020, Words Without Borders presented a special issue on Queer literature with authors&translators from all around the world.

I contributed to Words Without Borders with an excerpt from my unpublished novel “Elfiye” which was translated from Turkish to English by Ralph Hubbell. To read the whole excerpt, please click here.
Here is the editor’s note by Susan Harris:
Welcome to our eleventh annual Queer issue. At this time of crisis, grief, and rage, we present six queer narratives of characters fighting for identity and recognition. Turkish writer Nazli Karabiyikoglu offers a harrowing tale of exorcism and defiance. In two tales of self-transformation, Brazilian journalist Chico Felitti reports on a couple obsessed with facial modification, and Filipino fiction writer R. Joseph Dazo finds a young man who channels heartbreak into body art. Peru’s Juan Carlos Cortázar eavesdrops on a thwarted attempt to fulfill a lover’s dying wish. Chilean graphic novelist Gabriel Ebensperger draws a boy’s growing realization of not fitting in. And Russia’s Natalia Rubanova sets a romantic triangle to Schubert.
The Rally Reading Series and Words Without Borders celebrated a multilingual reading of queer writing from around the world, which launched WWB’s eleventh annual Queer issue. Our exciting lineup included Turkish writer Nazlı Karabıyıkoğlu; Filipino writer R. Joseph Dazo and translator John Bengan; Italian poet Giovanna Cristina Vivinetto and translator Danielle Pieratti; and Jeffrey Angles, read his translations of Japanese poet Mutsuo Takahashi’s work. The readings was followed by a Q&A. This virtual event was free, but we will also be raising funds for Shade Literary Arts’ Queer Writers of Color Relief Fund (—donations are still welcome! Tune in to see our terrific slate of readers and join the conversation with your own questions!
